Egypt scored six points in the Global Expression Report (GxR) in 2023. This was stable since 2019 and increased by one point compared to the score received between 2014 and 2018. Freedom of expression in the country increased significantly in 2011 and 2012, in line with the 25th of January revolution. However, the score dropped considerably in 2013 and even further after that. Furthermore, Egypt was among the five lowest-ranking countries on the African continent. GxR ranks countries based on the openness of the society, with a higher score being given to countries with more freedom of expression.
Global expression report (GxR) metric score in Egypt from 2000 to 2023
The source adds the following information regarding the metric: The Global Expression Report’s metric (the GxR Metric) tracks freedom of expression across the world. In 161 countries, 25 indicators were used to create an overall freedom of expression score for every country, on a scale of 1 to 100 which places it in an expression category.
