Over the observed period, South Africa's score in the Global Expression Report (GxR) followed a negative trend. The country's freedom of expression score gradually decreased from 80 points in 2000 to a score of 73 in 2023. However, in comparison to other African countries, this score ranked South Africa in fourth place, together with Namibia. GxR ranks countries based on the openness of the society, with a higher score being given to countries with more freedom of expression.

The source adds the following information regarding the metric: The Global Expression Report’s metric (the GxR Metric) tracks freedom of expression across the world. In 161 countries, 25 indicators were used to create an overall freedom of expression score for every country, on a scale of 1 to 100 which places it in an expression category."
