Section 230 is a legal provision which protects tech companies from being held liable for content posted by users of their online services. Companies are, however, required to remove illegal or harmful content from their platforms. According to a survey conducted in April 2023, 45 percent of adults in the United States had no awareness of Section 230. Overall, just one in 10 respondents had seen, read, or heard a lot about Section 230.
