Remaining carbon budget and emissions from oil and gas fields in the UK 2023
As of 2023, the United Kindgom had a remaining carbon budget of about 3.3 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂), in order for the world to be on track to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The country's estimated emissions from active and planned oil and gas fields stood below this value, at around 1.8 GtCO₂. Nevertheless, emissions including undeveloped and undiscovered oil and gas fields – as well as active and planned fields – were estimated at some 7.6 GtCO₂, more than double the UK's remaining carbon budget.
