Approximately 29.7 billion euros of total auctioning revenues generated under the EU ETS system went directly to EU member states in 2022. Germany generated the highest EU ETS auctioning revenue that year, at 6.8 billion euros. Germany, together with Poland, Spain, and Italy, accounted over 60 percent of total auctioning revenue that went directly to EU member states in 2022. Since mid-2023, all EU member states are required to use all auctioning revenues on climate action. 17 EU member states were close to, or aligned with, these new requirements.
