Between 2018 and July 2023, 16 companies were issued fines with disclosed amounts for violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Epic Games, the popular Fortnite video game developer, received the most significant penalty for COPPA violation in December 2022. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of the U.S. issued a 520 million U.S. dollar fine for failing to notify parents and obtain consent before collecting personal information from children under 13. Furthermore, the company required parents who requested the deletion of their children's personal information to take complicated actions to do so. The latest penalty imposed for COPPA violation was against Microsoft. The 20 million fine was received by the tech giant for collecting personal information from children without notifying their parents or obtaining their parents' consent and for illegally retaining children's personal information.
