From 2013 to 2022, nearly 73 percent of males with hepatitis C in the United States who received viral testing confirmed their initial HCV infection. In comparison, the share of women that tested positive for hepatitis C in the U.S. during that period reached 62 percent, while about 34.6 percent were cured of the disease. This statistic shows the percentage of individuals with hepatitis C in the United States from 2013 to 2022, by viral clearance step and gender.

Ever infected: individuals who had a positive HCV test result between January 2013 and December 2021.
Viral testing: involves conducting 1 or more HCV RNA tests between January 2013 and December 2022, among those ever infected.
Initial infection: evidence of detectable HCV RNA in individuals with viral testing.
Cured or cleared: refers to individuals with initial infection who showed undetectable HCV RNA results (around one third of people with acute infections self-clear without treatment).
Persistent infection or reinfection: individuals categorized as cured or cleared showing subsequent detectable HCV RNA.
The categories viral testing, initial infection, cured or cleared, and persistent infection or reinfection were analyzed between January 2013 and December 2022.
