Nigeria had the strongest government response to modern slavery in Africa with an index score of nearly 54 out of 100. South Africa followed behind with 53 points. Both countries have addressed risk factors recently. Eritrea and Libya, on the other hand, the two countries with the lowest government response scores, were both involved in state-imposed forced labor.
Government response to modern slavery in Africa as of 2021, by country
The Global Slavery Index contains data on modern slavery in 160 countries. The government response index measures the national efforts in 176 countries to end modern slavery, looking at legal, policy, and programmatic dimensions. An index score with a maximum of 100 points (best possible response) is given based on 141 indicators.
