Overall, countries in Europe and Central Asia had the strongest government response to modern slavery worldwide in 2021, with an average score of 54 out of 100. On the other hand, African countries had the weakest response with an average of only 36 points. Nevertheless, there are major differences between countries within the regions. Looking at the different dimensions, the regions scored highest on national and regional level coordination, whereas they performed weakest om government and business supply chains.
Government response to modern slavery worldwide as of 2021, by region and dimension
The Global Slavery Index contains data on modern slavery in 160 countries. The government response index measures the national efforts in 176 countries to end modern slavery, looking at legal, policy, and programmatic dimensions. An index score with a maximum of 100 points (best possible response) is given based on 141 indicators. The regional scores are averages.
