The operation of residential buildings worldwide generated more carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions than any other segment in the real estate and construction sectors in 2022. Nevertheless, most of those CO2 emissions were indirect, which means that they were not generated directly in home buildings, but they were released by the energy sector to provide them with electricity and heat. The construction of buildings generated more CO2 emissions than other construction activities, such as infrastructure.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions of buildings and the construction industry as a share of all emissions worldwide in 2022, by segment
Characteristic
Share of total CO2 emissions by buildings and construction
The source obtains the data on emissions by the construction sector by taking into account the emissions of cement, steel, and aluminum used for the construction of buildings and infrastructure. Indirect emissions refer to those generated by the energy sector in order to provide electricity and heat to buildings.
