As of the 2021/2022 fiscal year, the grand total of prisoners in South Africa amounted to 143,223. Of these, around 67 percent were sentenced offenders. The Gauteng province had the highest number of inmates, with 19,749 convicted offenders, and 13,394 prisoners remaining unsentenced.

The fiscal year runs from 1 April to 31 March of each year.
Unsentenced inmates include those who are awaiting trial or sentencing, state patients awaiting placement in designated mental health facilities, and involuntary mental health care users.
