Out of the four largest cities in Germany, Munich received the highest score for space for walking and cycling in 2022. Munich scored 51 percent in the space for people category, which indicates how much road space is allocated to walking and cycling infrastructure, as well as levels of construction. Munich was followed by Cologne, which scored 46 percent.

Cities were scored on a set of indicators on a scale from zero to one hundred. For the category 'Space for people' the indicators included opportunity for walking and opportunity for cycling, as measured by the availability of dedicated infrastructure, and traffic congestion, which was measured by comparing travel time during peak time to uncongested periods.
