The duration of single-family home construction projects in the United States has increased a lot in 2021 and 2022. On average, it took a month for a house to be authorized by a building permit and reach its construction start phase in 2020, but that same process required 1.4 months two years later. Meanwhile, the time from start to completion of a single-family home increased from 6.8 months in 2020 to 8.3 months in 2022. Multifamily homes were nevertheless the most time-intensive type of residential construction project.
