Most livable Indian cities on Global Liveability Index 2023, by rank

As per the Global Liveability Index of 2023, five Indian cities figured on the list comprising 173 across the world. Indian megacities Delhi and Mumbai tied for 141st place with a score of 60.2 out of 100. They were followed by Chennai (59.9), Ahmedabad (58.9), and Bengaluru (58.7).

What are indicators for livability

This was the first time that Chennai, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad found a spot on the ranking, which was topped by Vienna. The index measures cities on five broad indicators such as stability, culture, and environment (with a weightage of 25 percent), healthcare, education, and infrastructure (20 percent). As per the Economic Intelligence Unit’s suggestions, if a city’s livability score is between 50 to 60 then “livability is substantially constrained”.

Infrastructure pulls Bengaluru’s ratings down

  It is noteworthy that Bengaluru, the capital city of the Indian state of Karnataka, topped the Ease of Living Survey 2020, within the category of cities with a million-plus population, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in India. Bengaluru is the IT hub of India and houses several multinationals and start-ups. As per EIU, the city received a score of 46.4 for infrastructure, the lowest among the ranked Indian cities. The infrastructure score is based on indicators such as the quality of roads, public transportation, international links, energy, telecommunication, water, and housing.
