Germany is expected have the highest number of hydrogen valleys in any country worldwide by 2033, with five in total. This European country has already initiated its hydrogen production in four different geographic clusters - Northern Germany, North Rhine Westphalia, Central Germany, and Berlin Brandenburg Lausitz to the east. In comparison, the United States is forecast to be home to only two hydrogen valleys and 78 hydrogen production projects by 2033.
What are Hydrogen Valleys?
Hydrogen valleys are geographical areas where a combination of clean hydrogen technologies are deployed and used by households, local transportation, and industrial plants. They can vary in size and scope, which allows them to adapt to local energy needs. According to the Accelerated Energy Decarbonization Scenario (AEDS), clean hydrogen or green hydrogen, is expected to have the largest production share of hydrogen worldwide by 2050.
Driving green hydrogen innovation
Green hydrogen has been considered a critical solution for decarbonizing energy systems, since it is generated by electrolysis from renewable energy. As of the first quarter in 2023, Green Hydrogen International had by far the highest net capacity for green hydrogen worldwide of any company. This cutting-edge technology alongside hydrogen valleys is expected to secure economic growth, as it will attract investments and foster the development of a local hydrogen economy. By diversifying energy sources and phasing out of fossil fuels, energy security and resilience would also be achieved.
