In order to establish the so-called European hydrogen backbone, an expected total investment ranging between about 80 to 143 billion euros is required by 2040. To build new hydrogen pipelines and repurpose natural gas pipelines the cost is forecast to range between 62.7 billion euros and 91 billion euros by 2040. Meanwhile, costs pertaining to compressing hydrogen are forecast to have an extensive range between 17.2 and 52.4 billion euros due to uncertainty and variability when it comes to the concept design, which will dictate the type of compressor technology used.
