Judicial independence in the United States remains high with an index score of over 0.8 in 2022. However, judicial independence fell from 0.86 in 2015 to 0.8 in 2017. During his term from 2017 to 2021, former President Donald Trump installed three judges to the U.S. Supreme Court seen as friendly toward the Republican party. Since then, the Supreme Court has tilted towards conservative values when handing down decisions. The Court attracted a lot of attention in 2022 when it overturned Roe v. Wade, making it possible for states to regulate women's right to abortion. It also ruled that state governments cannot prevent people from wearing firearms publicly in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, and that executive agencies need authorization from Congress when introducing regulations in West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency.
