Electricity capacity installed in the EU 2020-2040, by scenario

The electrification of the energy system is a crucial point of the clean energy transition in the European Union. The installed electricity capacity in European countries amounted to roughly 1,050 gigawatts in 2020, but three scenarios that investigate decarbonization pathways show that this figure has to grow remarkably by 2040. The Fit for 55 (FF55) and REPowerEU scenarios forecast an installed power capacity of 2,584 and 2,933 gigawatts by that year to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. By comparison, Radical Action indicates that 3,484 gigawatts of electricity capacity should be installed in the EU by 2040 to achieve carbon neutrality by that year.
