Oil was the fuel responsible for most of Africa's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In 2021, the fossil fuel emitted almost 557 million metric tons of CO2. Coal followed, with close to 434 million metric tons. Although natural gas was the main source of electricity production on the continent, covering 40 percent of the electricity mix, it ranked third in CO2 emissions. This is mainly due to it being considered a cleaner source of energy.
