New Democracy, a Christian Democratic party of the center-right, won the Greek legislative elections on the 25th of June 2023. While the party received less than a majority of votes cast, due to the electoral system they received 52 percent of the seats in the Greek parliament, meaning that they can form a single-party government.
As the electoral system mandates that a party must receive three percent of the total votes cast in order to enter parliament, a number of parties fell below this hurdle and received zero seats, including the party of former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, Mera25. The election was the second held in Greece in 2023, after the May legislative elections failed to produce a party with a majority or a governing coalition.
