China is the world's leading titanium sponge producer in the world. In 2023, the East Asian country produced an estimated 220,000 metric tons of titanium sponge. Japan ranked second that year, with a production volume of 60,000 metric tons.
Titanium sponge is a porous form of pure titanium which has been reduced from titanium ore. Titanium sponge must then be melted or combined in an alloy to form an ingot which can be further processed into general titanium products.
