Cricket: largest margins of defeat in an Ashes Test match 2023

During the 1938 Ashes series held in England, Australia suffered a defeat of an innings and 579 at the hands of their old sporting rivals England at The Oval. This was the largest margin of defeat ever suffered in a men's Ashes Test match. During the 21st century, the heaviest defeat came during the 2010/11 Ashes series when England beat Australia on home soil at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by an innings and 157 runs.

In Test cricket, one of the worst defeats a team can suffer is to lose a match by more than one innings. To do so means that the victors have only needed to bat in one innings, while the losing side could not equal the victor's batting total in the space of two innings.
