Inbound tourism spending on experiences in the United States recovered in 2023, following a sharp drop with the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While the expenditure of international travelers on experiences was roughly 25 percent higher in March 2023 than in 2019, inbound spending on things reported a 15 percent decline over the same period.

The source specifies that "experiences" refers to tourist expenditure on restaurants, amusement and recreational activities, casinos, nightclubs, bars, and other events. Meanwhile, "things" refers to spending on convenience store chains, apparel, cosmetics, sporting goods, jewelry, footwear, bookstores, electronics, toys, and department stores. These definitions exclude the expenditure on transport and accommodation.
All data refer to the expenditure of leisure travelers while in-destination. Figures are in nominal U.S. dollars unadjusted for FX.
