Being an established website hosting provider, Shopify is used worldwide by e-commerce companies from different sectors. As of September 2024, fashion merchants ranked as the biggest users of Shopify services, with over 520,000 apparel online stores built on Shopify’s e-commerce platforms. Home and garden was the second-most popular category on Shopify, with roughly 229,000 stores.

Big competitors

Shopify competes with other hosting providers like WooCommerce. A comparison between the two indicated that WooCommerce has a strong overall presence, but it is used less among the top 10,000 and 100,000 most visited sites worldwide. With payment technologies embedded in the online stores, Shopify accounts for nearly 14 percent of the worldwide market of online payment processing technologies, ranking third after PayPal and Stripe.

Latest Shopify services

In August 2023, Shopify announced a new checkout service for online merchants who are already selling on Amazon. Rather than excluding or penalizing their additional sale channel, Shopify gave merchants the chance to offer the ‘Buy with Prime’ service, while still processing shoppers’ transactions. This might push the growth of Shopify Payment, the proprietary checkout technology of the company.
