In the 2013/14 Ashes series, Mitchell Johnson took 37 wickets for Australia. Johnson's endeavors with the ball that series constituted the ninth-best return for a bowler during a single men's Ashes series. This total was nine wickets shy of matching the 46 wickets Jim Laker took for England in 1956, which was the most amount of wickets ever taken by one cricketer in an Ashes series. Eight years before Johnson's prolific Ashes series, the all-time leading wicket-taker in the Ashes, Shane Warne, took 40 wickets against England. Despite Warne's efforts, England still managed to clinch the Ashes in 2005, ending the 16 year period that Australia had retained the Ashes. These 16 years ranked second in the longest time periods spent retaining The Ashes.
