Food waste in Portugal 2021, by sector
In 2021, Portugal registered a total of almost 1.9 million metric tons of food waste. The majority of this waste was due to households, which were responsible for almost 1.3 million tons of food wasted. The catering and hotel trades generated almost 163 thousand metric tons of waste, while retail and distribution created more than 224 thousand metric tons. Food manufacturing was responsible for the lowest portion of food waste, namely 75.3 thousand metric tons.
