During the financial year 2022, the share of subsidies in the total union government expenditure was 11 percent. It was expected to fall to eight percent in 2023. From financial years 2015 until 2019, subsidies' share continuously declined until hiking to an all-time high of 20 percent in 2021. This was mainly due to food subsidies provided to the poor and migrant families during COVID-pandemic.
