A 2023 online survey conducted in the United States found that over half of all respondents felt that the federal government should be responsible for tech companies collecting users' personal data. Overall, respondents thought that social media companies should bear responsibility for false or misleading information on their platforms, whilst 21 percent felt this onus was on the social media users themselves.
