During the financial year 2022, the value of union government subsidies amounted to around four trillion Indian rupees accounting for an eleven percent share of total expenditure. The all-time hike in subsidies in 2021, amounting to about seven trillion rupees, was mainly due to food subsidies provided to the poor and migrant families during COVID-pandemic. The value of subsidies is expected to fall to roughly three trillion rupees in the financial year 2023.
