Food balance sheet in Portugal 2020, by food group

In Portugal, as of 2020, the most consumed food group was the group of cereals, root vegetables, and tuber vegetables, as recommended by the standard food wheel. However, more than 30 percent of the Portuguese daily diet was composed of this food group, while the recommended share is 28 percent.
Dairy was the second most consumed food group, at a share of more than 17 percent. Vegetables are recommended to be the second most consumed food group, at a share of 23 percent, and the Portuguese diet was made up of only 14 percent of them.
The Portuguese diet had almost 17 percent of meat, fish, and eggs, while it is recommended only five percent of this food group per day.
