Italy's number of Natura 2000 sites has been on a mostly upward trend over the last decade. In 2021, the Mediterranean country had a total of 2,637 Natura 2000 sites, an increase of some 2.8 percent when compared to 2011 levels. Natura 2000 is a network of breeding and resting sites for rare and endangered species – as well as some protected natural habitats – that stretches across all EU member states.
