The number of Natura 2000 sites in France has seen a slight decline in recent years. In 2022, the European country had a total of 1,761 Natura 2000 sites, down from nearly 1,780 sites in 2018, when figures reached a record high. Natura 2000 is a network of breeding and resting sites for rare and endangered species – as well as some protected natural habitats – that stretches across all EU member states.
