In early 2023, the share of new permits issued for multifamily housing in the center of metropolitan areas in the United States was lower than in previous years. Meanwhile, the percentage of permits for the construction of multifamily housing in suburban counties or outlying areas has increased during that period. That trend towards more construction in the outskirts of cities has also been observed in the distribution of permits for single-family housing.
