Between 2020 and 2023, the share of new permits for new single-family homes issued in the most densely populated areas has decreased. While 18.8 percent of home construction permits were issued in the core of large metropolitan counties in 2016, that share decreased to 15.7 percent in the first quarter of 2023. Conversely, the share of permits issued in micro counties rose from 3.4 percent in 2016 to 4.5 percent in early 2023.
