Germany had the highest number of Natura 2000 sites amongst all European Union (EU-27) member states in 2022, with a total of 5,200. This was followed by Sweden, where the number of Natura 2000 sites amounted to over 4,100. That year, the number of Natura 2000 sites across the whole European Union totaled 27,193. Natura 2000 is a network of breeding and resting sites for rare and endangered species – as well as some protected natural habitats – that stretches across all EU member states.
