According to a 2021 survey, around 22.7 percent of high school students had consumed one drink of alcohol on at least one day in the month prior to the survey. The prevalence of alcohol consumption was highest among American Indian and Alaska Native students, and lowest among Asian students.

The 2021 YRBS sampling frame consisted of all regular public schools (including charter schools), parochial schools, and other private schools with students in at least one of grades 9–12 in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
