The largest low carbon ammonia producers worldwide as of 2022 based on installed capacity was SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company (formerly Saudi Arabian Fertilizer Company "SAFCO" ), with a total capacity of 1.16 million metric tons per year. Ammonia production with reduced carbon footprint has been achieved through the use of by-product hydrogen from ethane crackers and waste plastic gasification, as well as CO2 utilization for enhanced oil recovery and methanol production. These plants therefore have a reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional steam methane reforming (SMR) methods.
