Average realtor commissions in the U.S. 2022, by state
The commission rate for realtors is negotiable, but in 2022, the national U.S. average stood at about 5.5 percent. In three states, New Hampshire, California, and Massachusetts, the commission rate was under five percent. At the other end of the spectrum were New Mexico, Kansas, Vermont, and North Dakota, where the the rate was six percent or more. The realtor commission is usually paid by the seller and is split between the listing's and the buyer's agent.
