Located in the province of Shaanxi, the Northern Shaanxi Mine was the largest surface and underground mine in China (as well as in all of Asia-Pacific) as of 2021. That year, the mine, owned by Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group Co Ltd, produced approximately 47.09 million metric tons of unprocessed mined material — also known as Run-of-Mine (ROM). The second-largest mine in China in 2021 was Zijinshan Gold & Copper Mine, located in Fujian province, with a production volume of roughly 29.63 million metric tones of ROM.
