Subprime mortgages, car loans, and credit card loans were the types of lending to households for which a higher percentage of banks in the United States were tightening standards in early 2023. In the case of other types of mortgages, there were slightly more bank officers reporting tighter lending standards than those reporting a loosening of those standards. Any figure below zero signals that over 50 percent of domestic banks had looser lending standards, while figures above zero show that at least half of domestic banks had tighter standards.
