A 2021 analysis of pesticide residue concentration in European food crops revealed that grapefruits had the highest percentage of samples with pesticide residue concentrations exceeding the maximum residue level (MRL) with 9.92 percent of samples exceeding this threshold. This comparison shows that for many food types in Europe, the share of samples with quantifiable residues exceeding the MRL has increased between 2015 and 2021.
Share of selected food types exceeding the maximum residue level (MRL) of pesticides in Europe in 2015, 2018, and 2021
LOQ: Limit of quantification. The lowest concentration of a substance that can be reliably measured.
MRL: maximum residue level. The maximum amount of residue that is legally allowed to be present in food or feed products.
Non-compliant refers to samples that have exceeded the maximum residue level(MRL) or have measurement uncertainty that prevents accurate determination of compliance with the MRL.
