In 2023, feelings of work fulfillment were especially low within the nursing field in the United States. According to this 2023 survey, nearly two-thirds of surveyed registered nurses stated that they don't get what they want out of their job. On the other hand, that year, only 23 percent of responding nurses felt they got what they wanted out of their career.

The survey polled more than 800,000 Registered Nurses in the United States from Jan. 5 to Jan. 18, 2023, and received 18,226 completed questionnaires used in this report, of which 11,918 were from staff nurses with the remainder being travel nurses, per diem and other. The margin of error is 1% at a 99% confidence level, and the response rate is 2.5%.
