According to a global survey carried out in March 2022 among senior executives of fintechs that help to establish APIs, their biggest monetization opportunity lies in the creation of specialized solutions. For the most part, this is geared towards custom payment solutions such as digital wallets, or digital variants of payment cards. Other strategies include the white-labelling of customer journeys and creating an overarching marketplace so partnerships with banks can be more easily formed.

The source interviewed 50 senior executives and surveyed an additional 1,600. Among all respondents, 19 percent were enablers, which the source defines as bigtechs and fintecs that assist third-party platforms and apps by embedding financial services.
The source asked respondents about their institution’s open API ecosystem. Multiple answers were possible.
