In 2023, methane emissions from onshore oil and onshore gas operations produced approximately 36 and 15 million metric tons, respectively. The three main sources of methane within the oil and gas industry are venting, flaring, and unintentional leakages, known as fugitive emissions. In 2023, venting accounted for roughly 65 percent of the oil and gas sector's methane emissions, at some 50 million metric tons.
