In 2023, over three quarters of surveyed registered nurses (RNs) reported often feeling emotionally drained in the United States. The worsened emotional state of RNs goes hand in hand with other mental health metrics, where nurses have also reported higher levels of burnout and intention to quit.

This statistic shows the percentage of nurses who said they strongly agreed or somewhat agreed to the statement ''I often feel emotionally drained'' (n=17,840)Â
The 2023 survey polled more than 800,000 Registered Nurses in the United States from Jan. 5 to Jan. 18, 2023, and received 18,226 completed questionnaires used in this report, of which 11,918 were from staff nurses with the remainder being travel nurses, per diem and other. The margin of error is 1% at a 99% confidence level, and the response rate is 2.5%.
