In 2023, Germany avoided an estimated 250 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) through the use of renewables, which would have otherwise been caused by the use of fossil fuels. Electricity generation from renewable sources contributed approximately 78 percent of the total avoided emissions that year. The largest share of avoided emissions from renewables in Germany were from wind power, followed by solar power.
Biofuels and renewable electricity in transportation avoided almost 11 MtCO₂e in 2023, while renewable energies in the heat sector saved 44 MtCO₂e.
