Coal is by far the largest contributor to Germany's power sector emissions. In 2023, coal-fired electricity generation produced 131 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e), or roughly 68 percent of total power sector emissions. Nevertheless, Germany's coal power emissions have more than halved since the turn of the century.
