The regional transmission organization (RTO) PJM Interconnection accounted for the largest capacity retirements in the United States in 2022, at over six gigawatts. The Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection (PJM) operates on the eastern coast of the U.S., while the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) transmits electricity in the Midwest United States and some Southern states.
Coal accounted for the largest share of the power capacity retirements in the U.S. that year.
