As of March 2023, international mountaineers who wished to climb Mount Everest in Nepal during the spring season had to pay a royalty fee of 11 thousand U.S. dollars to the Nepalese government. Meanwhile, Nepalese mountaineers had to pay the lesser sum of a little over 560 U.S. dollars to scale Mt. Everest in the spring months. While royalty fees for climbing Mt. Everest were more affordable during the autumn, winter, and summer seasons for both Nepalese and international climbers, spring was the only season when the share of expeditions to have reached Mount Everest's summit between spring 2012 and spring 2022 reached above 0 percent.
In addition to the royalty fees each each expedition team was required to pay a garbage management deposit of four thousand U.S. dollars. With the number of mountaineers to have reached Mount Everest's summit between 2012 and 2022 having averaged over 500 annually, the garbage deposit was introduced to combat the high volume of discarded mountain equipment and waste left behind by mountaineers. Deposits were returned to climbers who brought back a specified amount of garbage.
