The main cause for wildfires in Mexico are intentional motives. In 2023, this represented over 35 percent of the fires striking the Latin American country. Only around 2.6 percent of Mexico's wildfires that year originated from natural causes. Meanwhile, the source of almost one quarter of the fires remains unknown. The majority of forest fires in Mexico have a duration of one day.
